Classes Offered June 15, 2010

Classes for 2014 – 2015:

We are planning to begin our fall semester on Monday, September 8 and ending on December 15 (15 weeks). Our winter semester would go from January 12 through May 4, with April 6 off for spring break. (16 weeks).

Preschool Classes:

We would like to offer some pre-school age classes free of charge for the younger siblings of those students enrolled through OHEA (i.e. gym, story time, music fun, etc.) and are looking for volunteers to help organize these classes.  In the comment section below, please indicate your interest in having your child(ren) involved in these classes and/or your desire to help.

Elementary Classes:

Elementary Grammar: (Grades 3-6)                        Teacher: Dawn Sweet

We will also identify and diagram basic sentences, as well as construct and edit original sentences.

The grade levels listed are flexible. This is an excellent refresher for older elementary students who may not have received in depth grammar training in the past and is ideal for those 2nd graders who have had grammar training and really desire a firm grasp of their language.

This class will run the full year (two semesters).

Introduce your young naturalists to plants—their structure, propagation, classification, and more—with this engaging yearlong classical science curriculum. Designed to be used with both readers and non-readers, each clearly organized lesson features content-rich narration; notebooking; and hands-on activities and projects using easy-to-find household items. Dissect seeds, force bulbs, make leaf skeletons—and take a close-up look at God’s flora kingdom.

We will be conducting most experiments in class, doing many hands on activities and discussing key components of each chapter, with the expectation that a more detailed reading of the text and any desired testing would be administered by and at the parents’ discretion.

Elementary Music (1 or 2 semesters)                     Teacher: Anita Hoskins

The goal of this class is to teach your child the basic musical elements needed to succeed as a musician, and to enjoy music.  You child will participate in singing, learning basic music theory, and engage in online learning tools that will be apart of weekly homework.   Just like reading every day, your child will be asked to play on the computer/ipad/other device 15 minutesevery week, with music websites that I provide.  The websites are child friendly and teach basic music elements such as note reading, rhythm exercises, and different musical composers throughout history to the present day.  If internet is not available, please let me know and other arrangements will be made available.  While this is a Christ centered class, and the majority of the songs we will sing will be based on Biblical principles, I will also be teaching the kids other songs that will help instill musical elements.  For example, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Old McDonald among many other childrens songs are great songs to help your child learn the musical elements necessary to be a successful musician.  Please note that I will do my best to pick songs that honor Christ and teach musical elements to your child.  This class is a fun environment full of movement, and music!

(Depending on the number of students involved, kids may participate in some singing ministry opportunities such as a Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and hopefully some retirement centers.)

Cost:                      $30/ semester

Elementary Spanish *(1 Semester)                         Teacher: Sue Sanderson

Upon completion of the Beginner’s Spanish 1 fifteen week semester, your child should be able to use basic sentence structure and participate in simple conversations. This will require some work at home.

Please note that we will not be receiving much instruction as to why parts of the Spanish language work the way they do…this is intentional.

I hope that you and your child will enjoy this process of memorization, intense listening and fun interaction while learning some of the basics of the Spanish language.

Cost:                      $15 per semester

Note:                    Beginner’s Spanish 2 will be offered 2nd semester.

Jr. High Classes

Intermediate Grammar/Writing: (Grades 6-9)                   Teacher: Dawn Sweet

Because language is a primary tool in defending our faith and sharing Christ with our world, this course will focus on creating a strong foundation in English grammar skills. Grasping the mechanics of grammar helps to ensure greater mastery of language and leads to increased confidence in interacting with our world. This class will strengthen students’ understanding of the basic parts of speech and enable them to identify word functions in all types of sentences through a unique Q & A flow. We will also identify and diagram the 4 types of sentences, as well as construct and edit original sentences and paragraphs. The second semester will primarily focus on essay, research paper and persuasive writing.

The grade levels listed are flexible. This is an excellent refresher for high school students who may not have received grammar training in the past and is ideal for those 5th or 6th graders who have had grammar training and really desire a firm grasp of their language.

This class will run the full year (two semesters).

This study provides a basic introduction to the structure and themes of the Word of God. As students journey through this fast-moving survey, they will discover the truths and applications that God has provided in each book of the Bible. God’s gracious work is clear—from creation to the cross to the consummation of time.

Curriculum: Positive Action

Student workbook cost: $17 (Paid to teacher)

Cost:      $50/Semester

Jr High Science: Physical Science (2 Semesters)                Teacher: Beth Crawford

This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school biology. Thus, we generally recommend it as an 8th grade course. However, your student can also use it for their 9th grade course work. The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement. There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household chemicals and supplies. It is an excellent course for preparing the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum.

In class, we will be performing the experiments together on one week and reviewing information from the study guide the next week.

Curriculum:         Apologia

Secondary Choir (grds. 6-12) (1 or 2 semesters)                 Teacher: Anita Hoskins

The purpose of choir is to teach your child proper singing technique, performance technique, and understanding musical worship. My goal is to teach the students to understand what it means to use your talent for Christ. Christ wants us to make a joyful noise, and that is what I seek to pass along to students. I believe that singing and performing techniques help us to understand Christ-centered worship. Please note that performances are a main part of the class. If your child can not commit to a Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and White Caps game in the spring, and hopefully some ministry opportunities at retirement centers, this is not the class for you. We will also be delving into the topic of what true worship means. For example, what songs to sing in church, the debate over hymns/choruses in church, and what worship looked when Jesus walked the Earth. Other components of the class will be participation/attendance to class, and small homework assignments.

Cost:      $50/ semester

Secondary Band (grds. 6-12) (1 or 2 semesters) Teacher: Anita Hoskins

In the band class, I seek to teach children basic musical elements to help them perfect their musical instrument. With many students seeking to learn how to use their talents in church, my goal this year is to teach the students how most churches lead worship with the many limited resources available to them. We will also be delving into the topic of what true worship means, i.e., what songs to sing in church, the debate over hymns/choruses in church, and what worship looked like when Jesus walked the Earth. Please note that performances and practicing every day are a main part of the class. If your child cannot commit to practicing every day, or cannot commit to a Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, White Caps Game in the spring, and hopefully some ministry opportunities at retirement centers, this is not the class for you. Other components of the class will be participation/attendance to class, and small homework assignments.
